Understanding How Your Moon Sign Is Calculated
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Moon (Chandra) governs the mind (Manas), feelings, memory, and emotional responses. While Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac based on seasons, Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac anchored to fixed constellations.
To calculate your Moon Sign, your UTC birth time is converted into Julian Days. The astronomical longitude of the Moon is computed and corrected by subtracting the Lahiri Ayanamsa (approximately 23.85 degrees for recent years). The resulting sidereal longitude is divided into 12 equal 30-degree signs (Rashis) and 27 Nakshatras of 13°20' each.
