The whole system rests on one thing: where the Moon sat in the sky at the exact moment each person was born. That position gives you a Nakshatra (birth star) and a Rashi (Moon sign), and from those two points, eight separate comparisons — the Ashtakoota — are run between the partners. Each comparison, or Koota, carries its own weight. Add them up and you get a score out of 36. Higher isn't automatically "better" in every case, and a lower number isn't automatically a red flag — which is exactly what the breakdown below is for.
